Implant secured dentures in Milton Keynes

Dentures can be uncomfortable, irritating and embarrassing. Many people struggle to chew comfortably and even say that their self-confidence has been undermined by wearing a denture. With advances in implant dentistry, here at Two Mile Ash Dental & Implant Clinic in Two Mile Ash we now have many innovative techniques for denture stabilisation which can transform your comfort, self-esteem and self-confidence with implant secured dentures.

How do dental implants secure dentures?

The implants are titanium screws placed into the jaw, to replace original roots. Depending on the treatment, you may need between four and eight implants to secure each denture in place. It’s a straightforward process which can be completed under local anaesthetic. The implants will need 3 to 6 months to heal and bond with your jaw bone to provide a solid support for your replacement tooth.

What is the process for dental implant secured dentures?

Temporary replacement teeth are usually fitted at the same time as your implant placement, which will stay in place until the final restoration appointment.

Once your jaw has healed, an abutment will be fixed to the implant to hold your denture in place. Abutments are produced in titanium, gold or porcelain, and can come as a standard fit or crafted specifically for you. These options offer a range of aesthetics results, depending on your requirements.

The benefits of dental implant secured dentures

Dentures are then fitted on top, to replace your missing teeth. Your Two Mile Ash dentist will carefully match the colour of your crown to your natural teeth.

Using an implant supported denture to replace multiple teeth has the advantages of:

            • Chewing function is improved - the denture is much more stable - reduced risk of digestive problems
            • No more concerns about embarrassing situations when a conventional denture may drop - improved self-confidence
            • Better support for facial tissues - giving a more 'youthful' appearance
            • No need for unpleasant denture adhesives or pastes
            • The implant secured denture can be removed to ease cleaning around the implants

Can anyone have implant retained dentures?

If you have good general health you are likely suitable for implant-retained dentures in Two Mile Ash. There are very few factors that make treatment unsuitable, though smoking and a history of gum disease have been shown to affect implant treatment success rate.

                  Does dental implant treatment hurt?

You’ll usually be given a local anaesthetic (and a sedative if you choose) so you feel more comfortable during your treatment. Most of our patients recover quickly, but you might experience some discomfort and swelling for several days. Don’t worry, we will provide you with aftercare and if you are worried about anything you can contact us for reassurance and advice.

What are risk factors for implant failure?

It is generally accepted that implants do have a very good success rate. However certain habits and medical conditions do increase the risk of complications and possible implant failure. These include:

                  • Poor bone volume or density
                  • Poor oral hygiene
                  • A susceptibility to periodontitis (gum disease)
                  • Smoking
                  • Excessive alcohol consumption
                  • Diabetes
                  • Immuno-suppression
                  • A history of radiotherapy to the jaws
                  • The prescription of Bisphosphonate drugs to manage osteoporosis

Of these habits and medical conditions only large doses of radiation to the head and neck prevent implant placement being considered but you should be aware that they can influence whether your implants integrate then survive in function. It is also true that these habits and conditions can be accumulative. For example a diabetic patient with a history of periodontitis and who smokes is at a higher risk of implant complications. An increased risk of post-operative complications or failure in function will affect the guarantees we can offer you and will also guide us in your maintenance programme.

Should I have dental implant treatment abroad?

We don’t recommend having dental implants in other countries. If you have any problems later on, it can more difficult to get these sorted as you will have to travel back to where you had your treatment (multiple visits are often needed). Also, as there are different implant systems, some may not be compatible with the availability of implant components in other countries.
